APF is a Portuguese NGO, established in 1967, with the legal status of IPSS (Private Institution for Social Solidarity) focused on health issues. It is also registered as a NGO and Family Association. APF has its Headquarters in Lisbon and operates through 6 branch offices throughout the Portuguese territory. APF is the Portuguese member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), a worldwide movement providing reproductive health and family planning services in over 180 countries. The mission of APF is: “to contribute to empower people in order for individuals to make free and responsible choices in their sexual and reproductive lives, and to promote positive parenthood”. In addition, concerning the issue of FGM, APF has developed a wide range of activities on advocacy, public awareness, training of professionals, publications, research and community work (the latter largely with migrants from Guinea Bissau).
